The drop-in center Hugs & Food is looking for a volunteer masseur for a new effort that is about mental and physical health.

Why become a volunteer masseur? : Massage is a great way to help homeless and socially disadvantaged people . The massage provides calm and presence , relieves physical and mental tensions and relieves pain, stimulates the senses and provides greater body awareness.

About Hugs & Food:

Hugs & Food is the cathedral's dining and meeting place for the homeless in Copenhagen and has premises in Turesensgade 21, 1366 Kbh K.

Hugs & Food is open every weekday at 11 - 14 for homeless people who can come by and get a free meal of healthy and nutritious food. Target group are homeless street sleepers struggling with challenges such as substance abuse and mental illness. Hugs and Food pays special attention to the heavy part of the homeless environment, and works with the homeless who have difficulty being elsewhere or who do not have the rights to it.

A predominance of users are foreign and come from many different places in the world. A large part of the users speak nothing or call Danish and English. Many of the users are from Eastern Europe and currently. Are there many from Polish-speaking areas.


Practical: As a masseur, you will be affiliated with Hugs & Food and you will work among a professional and committed staff group and sweet and grateful users. The massage effort at Hugs & Food is completely new and therefore the relationship and collaboration with both users and staff must be built together. Many of the users speak little or no Danish, so the courage to communicate with both body language and English is a must.

We are looking for masseurs who can massage weekdays in the period 11-14. The specific days and times, we find together.

Before starting up, you visit together with our massage professional volunteer coordinator Hugs & Food, so that you as a volunteer see the place and meet the staff and users. Here you will also be introduced to the massage registration list and other practical matters. We make sure that there is equipment and oil available.

We expect you to:

  • has a massage professional education
  • is stable, patient and meets users at eye level.
  • can give massage for approx. 2 hours in the period 11.00-14.00
  • is over 25 years old.
  • Is clear in your communication and good at setting boundaries.
  • Is a spacious and empathetic person who will work to make users feel safe by using the offer.
  • have the desire and time to engage in volunteer work for a minimum of 6 months.
  • passionate about working with the homeless and the socially disadvantaged.
  • wishes to enter into a positive collaboration with the other volunteers, the staff of Hugs & Food and the secretariat of WeShelter, including 4 annual network meetings for volunteer masseurs.
  • Experiences with psychiatry and substance abuse injuries are an advantage, but not a prerequisite, and something you can also gain insight into the massage network.
  • Language skills from Eastern Europe are a great advantage, as a large proportion of users are of Eastern European origin.
