As part of our goal of promoting better conditions for refugee children, asylum seekers and families, we are looking for contact people who, via social gatherings, can be an important support.

About us Vores Asylbørn is a non-profit organization that aims to promote better and fairer conditions for refugees and asylum seeking children while they are in Denmark. We work with children and families at risk of deportation. Our unique approach is to revise the legal case of our clients and additionally focus on the psycho-social well-being of them. We have been successfully winning 95% of our cases, which means that we have secured residency and helped to set up a stable and supportive starting point. Our Asylum Children was the winner of the Children's Case Award 2019.

Vores Asylbørn has existed since 2014, but became an established association in 2016. The association has three focus areas that together contribute to promoting the association's purpose.

Advocating the rights of refugees and asylum seeking children:

  • We share stories about the living conditions and destinies of asylum children
  • We coordinate cross-organisational efforts to improve the rights and conditions of asylum children in Denmark

Legal advice:

  • We provide advice regarding asylum and residence cases
  • We support our clients during the entire process in whatever capacity is needed

Well-being of refugees and asylum seeking children:

  • We support the child's well-being, including providing family treatment
  • We act as caregiver for the child during the process and if action is taken against a child

About you

We expect that you:

  • are ready to familiarize themselves with, and respect, the organization's vision, core values, and ethical guidelines
  • Are prepared to spend 2 hours a week volunteering for the organization
  • can commit for a minimum of 6 months (but preferably longer)
  • can speak fluent English. It will also be a huge plus if you can speak Farsi or Arabic
  • are empathetic, good at listening and like creating meaningful relationships
  • know how to create and maintain good boundaries
  • are comfortable hearing hard stories
  • consider yourself to be resilient.

You do not need to have any prior experience as a contact person / mentor. The most important thing is that you have the desire to create a meaningful relationship and have the desire to learn. Your presence and support will be valuable for someone who may be feeling lonely, having a hard time, or otherwise finding themselves in a difficult situation.

We also ask that you set aside 2 hours a month to participate in a meeting with the other volunteers as well as the Volunteer Coordinators. At these volunteer meetings, we talk about success stories, challenges, and provide support to each other and teach different tools that you will be able to use in your volunteering work with us.

As a volunteer contact person, we match you based on your profile and experiences, so you can feel as comfortable as possible with the task. You may be matched with a child or an adult asylum seeker. You will agree to a specific assignment developed based on the clients' needs and assessed by the Volunteer Coordinator. This could be for example a walk or a phone call, help with homework, participation in sport/ outside activities, or playing games helping to strengthen or develop different skills,

What we offer

  • Participation in an organization that helps and improves the rights and conditions of asylum seekers.
  • You will report to a Volunteer Coordinator who will offer coaching, support and guidance with your work. You will never be alone volunteering with us.
  • The chance to develop your knowledge, as well as interpersonal and professional skills.
  • Supervision with a psychologist with your fellow contact people, regular check-ins and an environment that cares about your mental health while volunteering.
  • Workshops on topics that you can help develop and use right away in your volunteering work.
  • Freedom in organizing your volunteering the way it suits your personal life.
  • An introduction to the Danish asylum system (3 hour course).

Based on your application, you will be invited to an initial interview where personality, interests and motivations will be discussed.

Interviews are held on an ongoing basis. We look forward to hearing from you!
