Volunteering gives me a chance to help, feel useful and have a good time
Petya Valerieva is from Bulgaria and studies at University College of Northern Denmark. She volunteers at a recycle shop for clothes in Aalborg, run by the humanitarian organization Blue Cross (Blå Kors).
"I've always been interested in volunteering in Denmark as a "tool" for spicing up my everyday life.
Petya found her volunteer job on volunteering.dk, when she was looking for something to do in her summer holiday.
In the shop Patya helps with organizing, sorting and selling the second hand clothes that are given to the organization. "As a person, I love clothes and organizing them, so I was instantly attracted by the volunteer job post."
For Patya there are many reasons for volunteering "it's a really good way to put my effort in a direction, where I am actually needed and appreciated for what I do". Every time when my shift in the shop is over, I feel mentally good. I know that I've used my free time to help with something or someone that needs my help.
Three words to describe why I like volunteering:
- New, because I meet new challenges every time I do it
- Exciting, because I engage with the cool people I do the service with
- Usefull, because it is for a good cause
